Carolina Home + Garden by Lauren Stepp | Check out the article on this 474 sqft infill house in the Kenilworth neighborhood by the team of Wilson Architects and Lobo Builders. It is one of the more interesting and unique constructions of this past year that Kelly and I were able to tour and a good example of site specific design. Cheers!
Linda McCane Gritta | Last week I was able to pause and visit with artist, and Modern Asheville friend, Linda McCane Gritta at her painting studio along the river in Woodfin. It didn’t surprise me to find her along the river as her work is naturally watery and an element she is at home around. Though a Chicago native Linda and her work have that Northern California vibe {I call it Urban Zen} of grounded coolness mixed with the water and shimmering light of the bay area using those complimentary Diebenkorn-ish warms and cools I love.
Linda graduated from the New York Studio School in 2001 followed by a BFA from Converse College in 2004 and has been producing full steam ever since. Though Linda enjoys her figural work, expressing the figure in relaxed, natural contexts, she loves the gut level adventure of abstraction. The process uses that push-pull of both intuition and intellect, chaos and balance, control and surrender that we see all around us in nature. She likens the “letting go” process to jumping off a skyscraper and having to fashion your own net on the way down being left with moments of inherent experience and instinct as resources.
Linda currently exhibits her work in both North and South Carolina and New York City. Her work can be found in numerous private and corporate collections. Also, she is represented by Serena & Lily of Sausalito and Libby Silvia ArtStyle in Boston. She recently contributed one of her abstract paintings for the Raise Your Hand WNCap Auction last month. To see more of her colorful work visit her website here. Enjoy!
Less Charlotte More Copenhagen | As a designer, realtor and resident of Asheville I have had fantasies that the development of our city was influenced by more European lifestyle models, as opposed to, American ones.
I’m not alone in this thinking given multiple conversations with business partners, friends and neighbors. I’m particularly drawn to the design, cultural and sustainable influences of Scandinavian countries. Many times I’ve attempted to capture these thoughts over the years, but have found these articles by Build LLC out of Seattle that seem to pick up on the spirit of our combined thinking.
“The principles that the Danes operate with and the philosophy that they exude seem to make for an ideal environment — a deliberate environment. What we learned about life and design while living in Scandinavia influences every house we design and every dinner party we throw”
As you read through these two articles, Studies, Scandinavia & Schnapps & 10 Things We Learned in Scandinavia, think about how it could apply to both the environment, culture and spirit of the city we love and the evolution into our shared future. How do you want to live and what do you want us to become? And for some cool visuals visit our Pinterest page here. Proost!
From Sight Unseen | Here’s One Thing We Can Do Today to Help Enact Change
Hi Folks! Check this out from Sight Unseen, “Though we don’t typically use this space for anything political or even particularly personal, we woke this week, as so many did, with a heavy heart and an urge to do something that matters. At the heart of it, Sight Unseen has always been about providing inspiration and creating a platform for unheard voices. Today, we plan to use that platform for a different cause. Starting now, we are launching a fundraiser called Design for Progress. Voting with our ballots didn’t work, so we’re going to vote with our wallets, providing assistance to causes that will almost certainly be under attack under America’s new administration. We hope you’ll join us.
On Generosity.com, we’ve created a fundraiser to benefit to some of the organizations we feel are doing important work to protect groups and issues in need of the most support after this election: Planned Parenthood, Everytown for Gun Safety, the ACLU,the Southern Poverty Law Center, Human Rights Campaign, EarthJustice, and the National Immigration Law Center. To anyone feeling powerless, marginalized, scared, or angry today, this is one small thing we can all do to help.”
I stopped by to visit the progress at Shelburne Woods, a new eco-friendly mini-community in West Asheville. The framing has begun on 51 Shelburne Woods and landscaping will be going in after Thanksgiving. Sweet! Give us a call if you want to know more or go here for more info. Cheers!
