Zen Meets Mod
Print-04-1.jpg

Zen, Mod and Embracing Nature — all terms that are music to our ears and many Mod fans living in Asheville. Atomic Ranch just published an article on this cool home in Seattle designed by John Burrows. The Northwest, in many ways, mirrors our own lush natural landscape and offers great inspiration for design in our environment. Check out this article on a peaceful mid-century home that sits harmoniously in nature. Cheers!

“She explains that Burrows built about 35 homes in Northeast Seattle, endeavoring to construct modern dwellings on heavily-forested lots that many considered too difficult to build on. The gamble was worth it, resulting in homes that are not only modern, even by today’s standards, but also embrace their natural surroundings.”

Modern Birdhouses
Screen Shot 2020-04-15 at 10.09.35 AM.png

It seems we are all getting to know our gardens and outdoor living much better these days given our time at home. I see many photos of bird visitors on facebook posts including Kelly’s household. At our own home we have recently put up a bat house and are putting up one blue bird house given our acreage and food gardens. Try as I might to enjoy the traditional rustic bird houses out there I’m still drawn to clean design. HERE are some great examples thanks to Dwell. Be safe and enjoy!

Hi Folks! We hope you all are safe and well at home in your nests. If you are like us you are probably doing some projects around the house. Kelly and I are each updating our home offices to get more use out of them as our business is fully functioning, but our main office is currently closed. If we need something new for our spaces there are still some local specialty shops selling products and furnishings online and by other creative means. Here are a few places to check out: Atomic Furnishings and Design {photo below} has an online sale going on here. They will ship or arrange pick up. Solo Modern Home, also, has many modern styled clearance items online here. One of our favorite’s, Dwellings, is taking orders via the phone and email. Mobilia has an extensive online presence here as well. k2 Studio has a groovy new interactive shopping experience going on here. Robert at Splurge {photo above} continues to showcase his creative works on his Instagram page here. Thank you for continuing to support our local businesses during this time. Cheers!

While we, Kelly and Troy, are passionate about Modern, Mid-Century and Ranch homes {and design} we care about people first. We embrace all walks of life and what makes a person unique. Our clientele definitely comes with their point of view and we love assisting them in taking the first step in buying/creating or selling their tailored nest here in the mountains. After all, your home is your third skin ~ the most outward reflection of who you are. Your home is your PLACE TO BE YOU and only you.

What makes us ~ US? For the past 10+ years we fully use both hemispheres of our brains in the process of real estate problem solving. We weren’t always Realtors. At one point we both managed complex creative and story driven projects in film, television, theme park design and product design. Even then we were successfully manifesting the vision of others long before our success with homes. We know how to manage the intricacies of complicated processes, insure investments, keep everyone on the same page all while maintaining the initial vision and spirit of each project. From street smarts to intuition and from the big picture to the minuscule details our combined abilities can help you achieve your personalized lifestyle dreams and make a smart investment for both your spirit, your wallet and well-being. We will let you know when you need to jump or when to pause and breathe. We know the nuances of Asheville’s specialized market. And speaking of Asheville, there is no better place to nurture your individuality and no better champions than US!

Lastly, we are HERE and OPEN for business during this time. We are keeping informed on a daily basis of the best practices to keep you and our community safe. Please don’t hesitate to reach out and let’s see what we can safely do together. Cheers to ALL of you! Kelly and Troy

Modern Asheville | Trillium Cove House

Modern Asheville continues to grow with new modern and contemporary homes of all sizes being constructed. Check out this sweet modern home completed late last year and designed by Rusafova Markulis Architects along with R.J. Taylor, the owner. The Trillium Cove Residence is located on a wooded lot in the subdivision of High Hickory which is just east of town yet tucked away in a beautiful forest. The owners wanted a small but efficient home that felt cozy but also connected to the outdoors though covered decks and mindfully envisioned outdoor spaces. The house is positioned high up on the lot to take advantage of the surrounding views. The upper level houses the open concept living, dining and kitchen as well as the master bedroom suite. The lower level has a guest bedroom, a guest bathroom, laundry and small workshop space accessible through the covered parking.

In order to keep costs down they designed a simple 1350 sf shed roof volume elevated on one end to allow for covered parking below. They, also, added visual interest by creating a “floating” roof effect as well as by adding rough sawn pine siding to the clean palette of painted cement siding and cast in place concrete walls.  Sustainability features of Trillium Cove Residence: a tight building envelope, Duke Energy HERS certification, small building footprint, passive solar design, rain water collection and cross ventilation. The overall design approach was for the construction to disturb as little ground as possible and to meticulously restore all disturbed areas with native plant species after the house and the driveway were completed. R.J. took extra care to transplant native species from the house site all around the property in order to return it to its initial state of health and balance. The landscaping also incorporates natural systems for storm water control.

The home will be on featured on our Modern Home Tour in 2020 which is now scheduled for September 12th. Cheers!
