Mountain Mid-Century Home | Before and After

We are always looking for inspiration for our Asheville audience from both here and other places. This modern home built in 1967 in the hilly Chautauqua area of Boulder, Colorado, has sweeping views of the surrounding mountains. But inside, it needed work to make it more functional for the current homeowners, a couple with two children. They turned to architects at Dodd-Studio to reconfigure the layout with materials and finishes consistent with the home’s midcentury design. They enlisted designer Kate Van Sluyter to update the interior.

Van Sluyter says, “Their goal was to preserve the architecture but also make it more functional for their daily lifestyle and two children, with updates to modernize it. We kept the language of midcentury modern but not outright. The finishes are more current.”

PRIDE Month
Screen Shot 2020-06-02 at 6.58.22 AM.png

June is PRIDE month. Yeah! While we celebrate, as always, our GLBTQ brothers and sisters, 2020 has given us more reason than every to gather under a bigger umbrella of universal humans and love. In the words of Desmond Tutu, “We are made for goodness. We are made for love. We are made for friendliness. We are made for togetherness. We are made for all of the beautiful things that you and I know. We are made to tell the world that there are no outsiders. All are welcome: black, white, red, yellow, rich, poor, educated, not educated, male, female, gay, straight, all, all, all. We all belong to this family, this human family, God’s family.” Cheers! We have always loved Homeland Park for its location, small living and charm. Homeland Park is situated on a hillside at the intersection of Tunnel Road and Swannanoa River Road, you might be surprised to stumble upon a group of historic log cabins. Originally developed as a mountain resort almost a century ago, this rustic neighborhood is home to an eclectic mix of residents and has recently become revitalized.

“Over the past 20 years, Homeland Park has transformed from a somewhat sleepy neighborhood to a vibrant community,” says Susan Rhew, who owns three of the cabins, and lives in a carriage house she designed and built in 2009. Residents chat from their covered front porches, help one another with lawn care, offer assistance if someone has a crisis and get together for community gatherings with shared food and music provided by neighborhood musicians.
