“Residential designers (architects, interior designers and others) bring a wealth of knowledge and skills to make sure all aspects of remodeling and custom home projects go as smoothly as possible.

Talk with almost anyone who’s ever tried to do a construction project without pro help, and you’ll likely hear one statement over and over again: “I wished I had hired a designer.” Even in smaller projects, like a one-room remodel, once you open up those walls, situations arise for which only an experienced professional can apply his or her creative problem solving to save time and money.” Find the full article here.

SKY CLUB HISTORY | According to Rob Neufeld, The Sky Club, a restaurant and dance club operated by German-Americans Gus and Emma Adler atop Beaucatcher Mountain, started out as the Old Heidelberg Supper Club in the late 1930s and changed its name in 1942 in response to anti-German sentiment. The Adlers, East Asheville restauranteurs, had purchased the estate of Oliver Cromwell Hamilton. After Gus' death in a fire in 1952, Emma continued the club, hosting celebrities such as Grace Kelly and Robert Mitchum, in town to make movies. "Buncombe County did not allow sales of liquor," historian Sharon Fahrer writes. Sky Club patrons "would bring their own bottles ... They were also charged a dollar for a bucket of ice." The Sky Club "was known for ... strip steaks and shrimp cocktail," as well as for views, Rick McDaniel writes in his book "Asheville Food." In 1957, Castle in the Sky purchased the Sky Club from Emma Adler for $65,000, with more than that to be spent on renovations. The corporate treasurer was Fred Seely Jr., E.W. Grove's grandson. The president, William Conrad of New Jersey, revived the panoramic third floor dinner-and-dance hall as The Satellite Club. The Sky Club was later sold and converted to condos.

We have always loved Homeland Park for its location, small living and charm. Homeland Park is situated on a hillside at the intersection of Tunnel Road and Swannanoa River Road, you might be surprised to stumble upon a group of historic log cabins. Originally developed as a mountain resort almost a century ago, this rustic neighborhood is home to an eclectic mix of residents and has recently become revitalized.

“Over the past 20 years, Homeland Park has transformed from a somewhat sleepy neighborhood to a vibrant community,” says Susan Rhew, who owns three of the cabins, and lives in a carriage house she designed and built in 2009. Residents chat from their covered front porches, help one another with lawn care, offer assistance if someone has a crisis and get together for community gatherings with shared food and music provided by neighborhood musicians.
