SPLURGE

photo-10I attended the opening of a new shop, Splurge, on Thursday night - a few steps down from the Wedge Brewery in the River Arts District. Though I use the word shop, the experience was that of a  gallery given the artistic vision and curated collection of vintage furnishings and curiosities created by the owner, Robert Nicholas, and a handful of his artistic friends. Robert has a distinctive eye for picking vintage objects and crafting light fixtures that defy conventional scale and textures. So, if you have a space that's beggin' for a conversational focal piece stop by 123B Roberts St. Bring a truck!Splurge Comp

Vintage Modern 05: STUF Antiques

Lamps CompI stopped by to see Otto Hauser yesterday, one of the owners of STUF Antiques on Broadway in downtown Asheville, along with Craig Culbertson. They have a lamp repair shop along with a nice assortment of antiques. We recently had him refurbish two vintage lamps  for our contemporary condominium. While there I couldn't help noticing that their Mid-Century and Danish Modern collection has been growing over the years. Along with Revive in Biltmore Village,  I think they have one of the best curated collections of vintage modern furnishings in Asheville. Craig, who travels the states in search of distinctive pieces, definitely shows a discerning eye. See below for a sampling or better yet stop by 52 Broadway for a closer look. Some of my favorite pieces are not shown here. Enjoy!STUF Comp

Roger and I were on a mission this past Saturday to find a craftsman to fabricate a modern daybed for our office. Chris McMillan's latest adaptation of his showroom, Dwellings, offers a variety of home furnishing vendors within one store that specialize in eclectic, modern and industrial style furnishings. Not expecting to walk in and find exactly what we wanted, we stopped by to see if there was someone who could make us something custom to fit our specific needs. Two hours later a rental truck was following us home with our new industrial daybed. Cool!As always, I was impressed with the well curated collection assembled by Chris and others. Its a shopping experience that offers a sense of discovery, an inspiration for good design and great values. (Don't miss the lamp shades!) If I don't leave having purchased something I always leave with a smile on my face given my experience as a customer. Haven't been? Click here for details.

While out this past weekend scouring for fun furnishings for my new mid-century apartment I was surprised to find more vintage modern furnishings sprouting up in new locations. One location was Oddfellows Antiques at 124 Swannanoa River Road. Owned by Tom and Kelly Haskin they describe their place as a 12,000sq/ft Design Warehouse. Since the last time I had visited they definitely have a great selection of thoughtfully displayed merchandise. I am already looking forward to my return visit!

I had the privilege of touring Kimmel Trading's museum worthy collection of 20th century modern furnishings today in their showroom in downtown Asheville.  The curator, Mark Field, is an art and design major and was hired by Joe Kimmel to manage his collection among other things.   Here is how they describe their collection on their website, "The Kimmel Collection has a rock-solid foundation on which to build, the Kimmel Collection offers a point of orientation and discussion in tracking the evolution of Modernism, which, in itself, is difficult to define. The Kimmel Collection exhibit featured wide ranging American, European and Scandinavian fine art and design spanning 100 years from 1885 to 1985."For more information on Kimmel Trading and how to view or purchase from their collection please click here!
