Under Construction | Urban Infill Modern Home

Here is a progress peek at Roost's latest project under construction near UNCA where infill lots have been snatched up over the past year. We love how the opposing wood and metal volumes define interior and exterior living spaces much like the lower level parking court is carved out of the earth and defined by concrete.

Looking forward to a more detailed tour soon. Nice job David!

Modern Mixer | Thank You!

A big thank you to our co-host, Jeff Crawford, for opening his cool home in Mountainbrook last night to so many of our shared friends and the modern community. The Roost remodeled pad looked amazing and everyone enjoyed meeting designer and builder David Way. It was definitely one not to be missed! For those of you who didn't make it or want to see it again enjoy the tour, here, of this modernized, mid-century home. Thanks again and cheers!

My past clients and I have been a big fan of David Way's Pereguine urban prototype home and have been watching its evolution over the years. After touring I thought that this one was his best yet. Everything was thoughtfully refined including the scale, space planning, material choices, cool construction details such as the industrial guttering, and the great rear outdoor living space. It felt complete and...well...just really sexy. Here is how the listing agent had described it. "You have heard it before but....this is a true must see. It will hook you the moment you open the door. Cypress/tile exterior, hardwood, porcelain and ceramic interior. From the porcelain surround fireplace with hearth bench to the white quartz counters and exquisite cabinetry this home will surely hook the discerning buyer. Tremendous lighting, state of the art appliances, upscale faucets, spa like master suite. Come take a look at this jewel."For more on David's designs visit The Roost Store. Grandma's House Gets Modern Updates David Way of Roost, LLC gave me a call today while he was putting the finishing touches on a very traditional ranch house not far from the Grove Park Inn. As I have only spoken to David about the new homes he builds, I don't think he was aware of my passion for ranch homes and their livability. He soon found out as I was on site in ten minutes. After all, he was in my hood.I caught David outside scanning his Mac on top of some discarded cabinets along the drive.  As is typical of many ranches in our mountain town, the garage is on the lower level. This means the homeowner is often greeted by an unfinished basement when they arrive home navigating ceilings of dangling fiberglass insulation through a sea of gray concrete. David easily carved out a new downstairs entry that was well lit with new recessed lighting and had a surprisingly nice looking ceramic tile on the floor that he found at Home Depot for $2 per tile. Deal! In the process he framed out a new office and laundry for the owners adding extra square footage and useful rooms with better access. The stairway was now well lit and open, drawing you upward into a new living space created from deconstructing a narrow corridor of doors, a typical ranch house issue. The house, having given up a few walls, offered a flowing lifestyle from kitchen to hall to living to outdoors. You could hear a collective sigh of relief from the owners who can now breathe in the openness of their relaxing new space bouncing with good chi. Cabinets, flooring, fireplace and lighting were all new of course, sporting a blend of contemporary styling. Sweet.Though ranch homes are very predictable in their challenges, they offer compact one level living that is so desirable by my clients today. Asheville has a variety of wonderful established neighborhoods that offer walkability and close proximity to amenities. Thanks, David, for giving us a peak! For more information on ranch home remodeling in the area search my blog or call me for some insight on good areas for buying and design resources for remodeling.Article and Photos by Troy Winterrowd

An Interview with Builder - David Way At last I was able to spend some time with David Way, a local builder who has found a way to create efficient and smart homes here in Asheville.  Over the years I have toured his homes in Montford and East Asheville and have remarked on how functional and fun they are.  Building upon challenging infill lots he constructs something lightlivable and inspiring. He has recently completed this modern spec home for owner Chris Barlas (right).  Chris owned a flag lot near UNC and wanted to build a rental house there.  I asked Chris why he picked David to build his home.  Chris says, "I have been watching homes for two years and every time I saw a house I liked it had been built by David Way."  David and Chris both enjoyed working together and admitted the process was entirely smooth.  David likes to keep the process organic so things can change as they come up allowing for owner input.David has been tinkering with home design since high school.  It was his preferred subject for doodling.  He was constantly reviewing architecture magazines and was fortunate to work for an architect during high school.  Following he earned a 2 year degree in construction before working for a developer for a few years.  There he learned a lot about construction efficiencies.  He now works on his own and has two other guys that work with him.  They have a workshop where they like to do all the millwork and specialty finishes for his projects. Some of the signature traits of David's homes are 2 x 6 framework, 9 foot ceilings, double insulated windows, tankless water heaters and tavern grade wood floors.  His goal is to build long lasting, durable and efficient homes for his clients.  Even though David's talent clearly shows through his aesthetic his favorite compliment is how little his clients need to adjust the thermostat.
