K2 Studios: Locally Made Tables

While enjoying a beautiful fall day in downtown Asheville I stopped in at K2 Studios for some retail exploration. The home furnishings retailer offers a creative and eclectic mix that makes for fun wandering. My question to Kim Hubbard, the Creative Director, was, "Do you have anything locally made?" I did discover that they offer these custom concrete and steel tables that can be made into everything from small accessory tables, desks and kitchen islands. Often, they will work with local architects to design integrated furnishings. The custom tables are hand-made by local craftsman Billy Sproul. Greensboro and Guilford County Modern Tour

I wanted to help spread the word about the MODERNIST HOUSE TOUR & SYMPOSIUM in Greensboro on 10-13 October.  There will be  free lectures by Sandy Isenstadt, Cynthia de Miranda, Sally Warther, and my friend Patrick Lee Lucas, a couple of special events on Friday and a weekend symposium. I know everyone will learn something about Modernism in Greensboro and North Carolina as a result.

A number of them were designed by Edward Loewenstein...but Modernism doesn't stop there in Greensboro as the tour includes houses by Gerard Gray, the builder J. Hiatt, and Pittsburgh-based architect Sylvester Damianos.  We hope you might make your way to the Gate City for this special weekend.  Read more about the tour and the houses featured online.

New Industrial Meets Green

Yesterday, I was invited to tour Biz611 in Hendersonville with Architect Ken Gaylord, a fellow AIA member. It is a newly opened office building in downtown Hendersonville that was designed to house selected, start up technical companies. The owner/developer of this small office building was very focused on green design and that it be evident throughout the building. Ken and his team were brought in to make his vision reality in this industrialized modern construction. The facade was veneered with bricks retained from buildings torn down from the site. Also, it incorporates living walls with plants as shown above. The South wall incorporates a shade structure that simultaneously harnesses solar energy. The interior consisted of recycled walls from a bank in Charleston along with reclaimed glass, wood and even railings used to cover water retention areas externally. For an expanded photographic tour of this building click here.

FOR SALE: Retro Ranches

Kelly and I enjoy scouting out simple ranches with those extra details that reflect that rustic side of Asheville or a universal retro look. We may find an asymmetric fireplace wall, exposed beams supporting a vaulted ceiling, vintage wood paneling or natural stonework. No matter the detail they can feel cozy and warm with a touch of cool that reflect the nostalgia of how we grew up. For more general information on Asheville ranch home living please see over a dozen past articles I've written on Ranch Homes. Currently on the market, are three homes shown above that all have that nostalgic, mid-century, ranch feeling. However, what makes these three Asheville homes distinctive is that they are situated on large, private lots with good indoor/outdoor relationships for maximizing that Asheville lifestyle. The visibility and flow to outdoor living creates that expansion needed to breathe free of the typical ranch box. Some of the interiors offer use of wood that helps bring the outdoors in. As typical of ranch homes, all three offer efficient living for those looking to economize and enjoy the broader lifestyle that Asheville has to offer. 672 Pinners Cove is 3 Bed + 2 Bath is privately located on 2.38 acres just east and then south of Asheville close to where I, myself, live. For more photos see here. 143 Buffalo Trail is 3 Bed + 2.5 Baths on 1.04 Acres just east and then North of Asheville. For more photos see here. 11 Pine Tree Rd. is 3 Bed + 2 Baths on .91 acres on one of my favorite North Asheville streets offering privacy and convenience. There is no virtual tour for this property. Kelly and I would love to help you get to know some of the vintage ranch homes here in Asheville that offer the convenience of location to downtown in established and friendly neighborhoods. Thank you, Troy

I just happened to be vacationing in Rehoboth Beach, DE this week and was aware that three of my favorite Modern Asheville artists were doing a group exhibition nearby. Mark Bettis, Vickey Pinney and Karen Weihs are the Asheville artists that make up the "Bending Form and Color" exhibition at the Peninsula Gallery in Lewes, DE. I stopped by for a look. Here are a couple images from there. If you are in the area you should stop by. Despite the Asheville-like rain today, it is absolutely the perfect time of year for a visit to this area.
