Enter the George Matsumoto Prize Competition Today!

Hello Architects, Designers and Home Owners! There are only six days left to submit an entry for the annual George Matsumoto Prize — our partners at NC Modernist Houses architectural design awards. We have had several WNC winners in the past few years.

The Matsumoto Prize provides motivating honors and incentives for a new generation of architects; contributes to wider public recognition of Modernism in all its forms (architecture, art, furniture, and fashion); and recognizes the significant economic and aesthetic impact of Modernist design across North Carolina.

The Matsumoto Prize is the only juried architecture competition in North Carolina that focuses exclusively on Modernist houses, provides financial awards, involves a national jury plus public voting, and connects to a major architectural archive. The Prize meaningfully and powerfully engages the public with the architecture they love and showcases exceptional Modernist architects and designers in North Carolina.

Sunday Morning Modern

A Round House from the Sixties | Thanks for our community members for sending us this fun little video. It truly captures the heart of those who live and breathe the nuances of a unique, mid-century home. Most people would assume that a dream home in the 1960s and a dream home today would be quite different. But, for Desiree Meyers and Julien Goldklang their dream home is a 1967 time capsule.

The 1,250 square foot Nolan House just happens to be round with a quirky zig zag roof! The designer of the house, Leon Meyer, produced many buildings, but only a handful of his round homes are still standing, and this may be the most well-preserved. Filled with vintage and mid-century furniture, the couple has gone the extra mile to make sure that the decor is spot-on 1967 authentic. Picking only the most iconic and well-made pieces (since they are furniture dealers) the home reads like a catalog of the best of the 60s. A veritable time capsule, the owners say the house “is kind of like stepping back into time.”

Designing Our Future | 014

A Regionally Inspired Parking Garage

As always, we believe we could be far more innovative in designing and constructing a living and sustainable downtown. I came across this little story on NPR and just wanted to share it as inspiration from the Northwest.

Here is a snippet:

"Employing a unique engineered wood product only recently produced by Oregon mills, a UO student team has won an Honorable Mention in a competition hosted by the American Institute of Architects Northwest and Pacific Region. The students in Professors Judith Sheine and Mark Donofrio’s spring studio designed a parking structure using Oregon’s newest structural wood product—cross-laminated timber, or CLT—an exceptional accomplishment in architectural education and design practice."

Go here for the rest. Wouldn't it be great to see some of our own designers be able to participate, use regional inspiration and resources, in the design and construction of our downtown buildings and community. Cheers!

Under Construction | Urban Infill Modern Home

Here is a progress peek at Roost's latest project under construction near UNCA where infill lots have been snatched up over the past year. We love how the opposing wood and metal volumes define interior and exterior living spaces much like the lower level parking court is carved out of the earth and defined by concrete.

Looking forward to a more detailed tour soon. Nice job David!

REVOLVE | Art Space Opening

We attended the opening of REVOLVE art space last evening. The new venue is the combined effort of artist's Colby Caldwell and Alicia Armstrong. Last night they featured their own work, but will be showcasing works of other creative folks in the future, along with offering space for the creative community. Their spaces, one upstairs and one down, are located in the Cotton Mill Studios in the River Arts District. Cheers!

Having just completed the foundation topped by finished concrete floors, builder Greg McGuffey sent us this photo of the framing going up today on his latest modern, shed style home under construction in West Asheville.

Cheers!
