Designing Our Future | 014

A Regionally Inspired Parking Garage

As always, we believe we could be far more innovative in designing and constructing a living and sustainable downtown. I came across this little story on NPR and just wanted to share it as inspiration from the Northwest.

Here is a snippet:

"Employing a unique engineered wood product only recently produced by Oregon mills, a UO student team has won an Honorable Mention in a competition hosted by the American Institute of Architects Northwest and Pacific Region. The students in Professors Judith Sheine and Mark Donofrio’s spring studio designed a parking structure using Oregon’s newest structural wood product—cross-laminated timber, or CLT—an exceptional accomplishment in architectural education and design practice."

Go here for the rest. Wouldn't it be great to see some of our own designers be able to participate, use regional inspiration and resources, in the design and construction of our downtown buildings and community. Cheers!

Under Construction | Urban Infill Modern Home

Here is a progress peek at Roost's latest project under construction near UNCA where infill lots have been snatched up over the past year. We love how the opposing wood and metal volumes define interior and exterior living spaces much like the lower level parking court is carved out of the earth and defined by concrete.

Looking forward to a more detailed tour soon. Nice job David!

REVOLVE | Art Space Opening

We attended the opening of REVOLVE art space last evening. The new venue is the combined effort of artist's Colby Caldwell and Alicia Armstrong. Last night they featured their own work, but will be showcasing works of other creative folks in the future, along with offering space for the creative community. Their spaces, one upstairs and one down, are located in the Cotton Mill Studios in the River Arts District. Cheers!

Earthtone Builders | Floor 2 Frame

Having just completed the foundation topped by finished concrete floors, builder Greg McGuffey sent us this photo of the framing going up today on his latest modern, shed style home under construction in West Asheville.

We are excited to watch the progress on this cool and quality home having brought builder and buyer together.

Cheers!

UNCA Architecture Tour | Lipinsky Hall

Built in 1964 | Designed by Six Associates

This building was constructed as the campus's first student union. The hall was named for local businessman and community leader Louis Lipinsky. A trustee of Asheville-Biltmore College, A UNC Asheville predecessor institution, Lipinksy was instrumental in generating support for the 1958 and 1961 bond referenda which funded the move from Seely's Caslte to the present site of the campus.

A special thinks to Kevan from Asheville By Foot for my personal tour of UNCA and helping gather information on the campus. Cheers!
